Democratic Socialist Surge in D.C. Mayor Primary

Janeese Lewis George, a Democratic Socialist council member, is topping the count in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for Washington, D.C.’s next mayor, putting her on a fast track to replace Muriel Bowser in January.

The race has narrowed to George and former at‑large councilman Kenyan McDuffie, whose platform leans business‑friendly. George’s agenda promises universal affordable childcare, stronger tenant protections, a freeze on utility hikes, and free bus rides for SNAP recipients.

DSA Mobilization Hits new heights

Washington’s DSA chapter deployed over ↑ 300 volunteers to knock on doors, a boost attributed to the momentum from New York’s Zohran Mamdani mayoral win last year. Chapter chair Kurtis Hagans told Reuters,

“When voters see our hats, they say, ‘Oh, DSA, like Zohran,’”

reflecting a brand that now resonates beyond New York.

National membership has jumped from ↑ 30,000 to over 100,000 since 2025, a surge driven largely by young, urban voters who feel the left offers a tangible foothold after years of policy stagnation.

Trump’s recent warning that the federal government could invoke the Home Rule Act if George wins underscores the high stakes; the former president warned, “We won’t lose our business.”

While the Democratic primary winner is virtually guaranteed the mayoralty in the heavily Democratic capital, the broader implication is a potential DSA foothold in three of America’s biggest cities—New York, Los Angeles and now Washington—if parallel races in LA and Chicago hold.

Strategists acknowledge that most socialist‑aligned candidates still run on the Democratic ticket, a pragmatic choice given the absence of a viable national socialist party. As DSA co‑chair Megan Romer notes, “We need more elected officials, but we also need people who will knock on doors, attend public hearings, and push ballot measures.”

The organization is already earmarking endorsements for down‑ballot contests in Utah, Florida, Georgia and Texas, while keeping an eye on how the pandemic has reshaped voter priorities.
