Dealership Service Revenue Surges as Oil Changes Become Core Profit Driver

Dealership service revenue is rapidly eclipsing new‑car margins, as dealers push every oil change, filter swap and tire rotation into a steady cash stream. After the pandemic‑induced inventory crunch lifted, gross profit on vehicle sales has slipped, forcing franchises to lean on service bays.

Dealership Service Revenue Gains Momentum

National Automobile Dealers Association data shows total service and parts sales have risen ↑ 48% over five years, reaching $164.6 billion last year. By contrast, average pretax profit per public dealer dropped from $6.8 million in 2022 to $3.9 million in 2025, a decline of ↓ $2.9M.

“Service is the biggest opportunity,” says Tim Pohanka, EVP and COO of Pohanka Nissan Hyundai.

Dealers are now matching independent chains on convenience: walk‑in slots, transparent video inspections and financing options for routine maintenance. A 2025 Ducker Carlisle survey found 42 % of U.S. motorists name a chain like Jiffy Lube or Walmart as their primary service provider, up from 20 % in 2020. The average age of a passenger car on the road hit 14.5 years, per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, extending the service window. Higher vehicle ages translate into more brake, suspension and fluid work, reinforcing the revenue shift. Price differentials remain a hurdle; dealerships argue that factory‑trained technicians and OEM data justify higher bills, a claim echoed in a recent Reuters analysis. Yet as new‑car list prices hover near $49,000 (Bloomberg), owners are scrutinizing every service invoice. The strategic pivot aims to lock customers into long‑term relationships, increasing the likelihood of repeat vehicle purchases when the time comes.
