Why workers turning down promotions is reshaping the Future of Work

Recent data reveal that 58% of employees would refuse a promotion that demands after‑hours availability, even with a salary boost. In the United States the figure nudges to 62%. The insight comes from a Hint App survey of 13,987 workers across the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Europe.

“It’s about the fear of being expected to stay permanently reachable outside normal hours,” says Leigh Roberts, PR manager at Hint App.

Two‑thirds of American respondents perceive hidden time demands attached to advancement, while ↓ 56% have observed a dip in colleagues’ happiness after they assume managerial roles.

Generational split on leadership

Among respondents aged 18‑34, 71% would decline a managerial move that threatens personal boundaries; 65% prefer progression without people‑management duties. Gen Xers face a different calculus: a Zety study notes that one in ten have rejected promotions to accommodate caregiving, and over ↓ 20% juggle both child and elder responsibilities, fueling burnout.

COVID‑19 sparked a reassessment of career priorities, according to Jasmine Escalera of Zety. Remote work and wellness conversations on platforms such as Reuters amplified the desire for flexibility.

A Careerminds poll finds that one in three workers declined a promotion last year, chiefly to preserve work‑life balance; 16% deemed the pay bump insufficient for the added stress.

Middle‑manager roles have grown perilous. Amanda Augustine, certified career coach, warns that managers now juggle AI tools, staffing cuts and heightened employee anxiety, making the prospect of promotion less appealing.

Nevertheless, Augustine advises employees to negotiate. “Your promotion offer is a starting point, not a final decree,” she says. Leverage your proven performance to secure clearer expectations and protected personal time.
