Africa’s first lunar science mission to ride China’s Chang’e-8

China’s Chang’e-8 lander, slated for ↑ 2029, will carry the Africa2Moon payload that marks Africa’s first lunar science mission. The Bounced African Low Lunar Sphere (BALLS) consists of three metallic spheres that will unfurl low‑frequency radio antennas on the Moon’s south pole, a region shielded from Earth‑based radio chatter. Scientists say the far‑side of the Moon offers the quietest backdrop for listening to primordial cosmic signals below 20 MHz, frequencies drowned out by our ionosphere.

How BALLS will work

Each sphere is a gyroscope‑style frame with interlocking rings, dual triangular solar panels and a tetrahedral interior. Once deployed, the trio will form a sparse interferometer; data will hop to the Chang’e‑8 lander, then be beamed back to Earth for processing. The array will act as a pathfinder for a larger ↑ 55‑antenna network envisioned for the Moon’s far side.

“The project proves that African engineers can build world‑class space hardware on a shoestring budget,” said Carla Mitchell, mission director, at the NASA Exploration Science Forum.

Development has been a continent‑wide effort: SARAO, the South African National Space Agency, university teams in Kenya, Ghana and Botswana, and private firms in Cape Town have all contributed components. Testing in April 2026 showed seamless data exchange between a mock lander and a BALLS prototype.

Future plans hinge on continued Chinese partnership; a second launch could deliver the full 55‑antenna suite, designed to self‑deploy from the lander for a more random distribution. Reuters and NASA are tracking the mission’s progress.
