Why the Venus Moon Vanished: Simulations Show Planet May Have Consumed Its Satellite

New research explains the fate of the Venus moon

Scientists have long wondered whether the Venus moon ever existed or if the planet was born moonless. A team led by Stephen R. Kane at UC Riverside built a physics‑based model that tracks the gravitational tug‑of‑war among Venus, a hypothetical satellite and the Sun over billions of years. The simulation reproduces the Earth‑Moon drift and then applies the same equations to Venus. Results show that, unless early Venus spun faster than a ↓ 12h day and the moon stayed under roughly lunar mass (↑ 0.01 M⊕), tidal forces would pull the moon inward until it shattered.

“When the model finally matched the lack of a present‑day moon, it felt like finding a missing piece of a planetary puzzle,” Kane told Reuters.

The doomed moon would have spiraled inward, ripped apart by Roche‑limit stresses, and its debris could have rained onto Venus, possibly imprinting a chemical signature in the dense atmosphere. Upcoming missions such as NASA’s DAVINCI probe may detect anomalous noble‑gas ratios that hint at such an event.

Implications for exoplanet studies

The authors argue that slowly rotating, Venus‑like worlds around other stars should generally lack large moons, a testable prediction as astronomers begin cataloguing exomoons.
