Britons evacuated from hantavirus-stricken MV Hondius cruise ship return to UK

After a swift response to a confirmed hantavirus case aboard the MV Hondius, British passengers and crew have been transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital’s isolation unit on the Wirral. Officials say they will remain under observation for up to ↓ 72 hours while health authorities conduct tests.

“The situation is being managed with the utmost rigor,” said a spokesperson from the UK Health Security Agency, referencing protocols refined during the recent pandemic.

The vessel, docked in Southampton, is slated for deep cleaning before any future itineraries. Reuters reports that similar outbreaks have prompted stricter maritime health guidelines across Europe. British Foreign Office officials are coordinating with the ship’s operator to ensure repatriated travelers receive appropriate follow‑up care.
