In a statement that has ignited a wave of criticism, Fatima Maada Bio said she will not publicly denounce female genital mutilation until she sees “reliable data” proving its harm. Health workers, survivors and opposition lawmakers rallied behind an open letter demanding clarity, warning that the stance could embolden the practice.

“We need evidence, not rhetoric,” one signatory wrote.

The president’s spouse emphasized that policy must be grounded in solid research, a claim Reuters described as “politically risky” amid growing activism.
