Bank of England warns AI rationing could become inevitable amid energy limits

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey warned on Friday that AI rationing could become a policy necessity as the UK’s power grid struggles to match the sector’s accelerating demand. He told a parliamentary committee that the nation faces “very big social choices” as energy scarcity forces trade‑offs between data‑centres, manufacturing and households.

Energy limits force AI rationing debate

Bailey cited recent forecasts indicating a ↓ 12% shortfall in net‑zero compatible capacity by 2030, a gap that could throttle AI workloads unless curbed.

“The question is no longer whether AI can expand, but whether we can afford it,” he said.

Industry leaders, from Reuters to Bloomberg, echo concerns that unchecked AI growth may outpace sustainable electricity supply, prompting calls for tiered usage caps. Analysts predict that without coordinated policy, the UK could see a ↓ 8% rise in electricity prices for high‑intensity users.

Government officials are now weighing a mix of incentives for renewable expansion and possible throttling mechanisms for AI‑heavy applications. The outcome will shape the competitive edge of British tech firms in a market where energy efficiency is fast becoming a strategic differentiator.
