VisionSpring, a nonprofit that supplies low‑cost eyewear, estimates one‑third of the sector lacks proper vision aid. A recent Reuters analysis notes the industry accounts for ↑ 11% of Bangladesh’s GDP and employs 4 million people. A randomized trial in India, co‑authored by VisionSpring’s CEO Ella Gudwin, recorded a ↑ 6% productivity lift and fewer stitching errors when operators wore reading glasses. The study, published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, calculated $1 spent on screening yields $3.37 in gains over 12 weeks. Scaling the model worldwide could generate $27 billion in extra annual output. Masco Group’s director Fahima Akhter notes that after screening 5,000 staff, about 30% received glasses and the firm plans to extend the program to its 20,000‑strong workforce.

“We view it as an investment, not a cost,” Akhter said.
