United premiumization reshapes fare dynamics

United Airlines has turned the notion of “premiumization” into a revenue engine, coaxing passengers to shoulder higher ticket prices while touting upgraded cabins and services. As fuel costs surged amid geopolitical tension, the carrier lifted fares and reported ↑ 16% operating revenue to $17.7 billion in Q2. CEO Scott Kirby told analysts that “demand is strong” and that the airline is accelerating investments from nose to tail.

“Any industry has to pass along price increases,” Kirby said.

Premium seats outpace economy growth

Revenue from United’s high‑end seats rose ↑ 16% year‑over‑year, while basic‑economy earnings grew only 11%. Delta posted a comparable 17% rise in premium revenue, underscoring an industry‑wide shift.

Fare increases meet muted resistance

Skiplagged data cited by Reuters show average fares on popular domestic routes climbing 35% and international itineraries up 15% this summer. Kirby noted that fare hikes persisted even as fuel prices later fell, reflecting a reduced price elasticity among travelers.

Cabin re‑engineering reinforces the premium narrative

In March United began swapping economy seats for premium positions on select aircraft. This week it introduced a new “Economy Plus” row where the middle seat stays empty, replaced by a shared table – a layout echoing British Airways’ short‑haul business class.

Outlook

Kirby estimates that, stripped of inflation, ticket prices sit about 13% below 2019 levels, but rising airport fees, labor costs, and fleet maintenance will likely keep fares elevated. Passengers appear willing to absorb the increments, at least for now.
