Anthropic business AI adoption eclipses OpenAI — three looming threats

American enterprises are now allocating more AI spend to Anthropic than to OpenAI, a milestone that marks the first time Anthropic business AI adoption has outpaced its rival. According to the May 2026 Ramp AI Index, adoption rose ↑ 3.8% to 34.4% in April, while OpenAI slipped ↓ 2.9% to 32.3%.

A recent Reuters analysis notes that 4% of worldwide public commits were generated by Claude Code, a doubling from the prior month.

Risks lurking behind the surge

Despite the surge, three vulnerabilities could reverse the trend. First, the token‑based pricing model forces enterprises to spend heavily as usage climbs, a pressure already visible at Uber, where AI budgets were exhausted in four months. “We are burning through our AI allocation faster than anticipated,” the company’s CTO told Bloomberg.

“When a productivity tool becomes so indispensable that it threatens the R&D budget, cost scrutiny will drive buyers to cheaper alternatives,” a senior analyst observed.

Second, compute constraints have triggered frequent service throttles, prompting Anthropic to secure a 300‑megawatt deal with SpaceX for its Memphis data center. Third, open‑source inference platforms and OpenAI’s Codex, which offers comparable performance at lower price points, are gaining traction among cost‑sensitive firms.

Anthropic’s recent partnership with AWS, launching Claude Platform on the cloud giant’s marketplace, reduces procurement friction but will not alleviate the underlying capacity shortfall until late 2026.
