Archaeologists in Spain have uncovered an ancient bronze chariot dating back ↑2400-year-old, a find that challenges existing notions of Iberian pre‑Roman culture.

Significance of the ancient bronze chariot

The 60‑centimetre vehicle, recovered from the Casas del Turuñuelo site in Badajoz province, features a flat top once used for incense offerings and a grotesque face that blends a gorgon with the river god Achelous.

“All decorative elements point to protective deities,” said Guiomar Pulido González, lead archaeologist, adding that the chariot may have been a ceremonial centerpiece.

Two bronze legs, fashioned as clothed figures, support the table‑like platform, a departure from typical naked Etruscan statues. The side panels display griffins—lion‑eagle hybrids—reinforcing the protective theme.

While similar chariots have been documented in Italy, this is the first instance of the gorgon‑Achelous hybrid on the Iberian Peninsula, suggesting cross‑Mediterranean trade routes that linked Etruscan craftsmen with local elites.

The burial layer indicates the object was deliberately broken and deposited around the late 5th century B.C., shortly before the mysterious community that occupied the Middle Guadiana River Valley vanished from the record.

Researchers propose that the settlement’s inhabitants performed a ritual “closure,” burning and filling their structures before abandoning them—a process that appears intentional rather than the result of conflict.

Evidence of imported Greek pottery and other Etruscan bronzes points to a thriving exchange network, underscoring the region’s integration into the broader ancient economy.
