Classroom Devices and the Decline of Human‑Centric Learning

As the new school year kicks off, educators are confronting a growing body of evidence that classroom devices undermine the interpersonal skills children need to thrive in an AI‑driven world. Sarah Schneider Kavanagh of the University of Pennsylvania and Katie A. Danielson of the University of Portland argue that the traditional elementary curriculum taught children to wait, negotiate, and explain their reasoning—abilities forged through face‑to‑face interaction, not screen‑based instruction.

Adaptive software can tailor lessons, but when pupils click through math drills alone, they miss the chance to hear alternative problem‑solving approaches. In an era where attention, curiosity, judgment, empathy and teamwork are increasingly prized, that loss matters.

“Children don’t need school to become more like the digital world; they already are,” the professors wrote. “They need spaces built for conversation, not consumption.”

Legislators in ↑ 17 states have already introduced bills curbing screen time, and Los Angeles Unified recently banned in‑class screens for pre‑K through first grade. Reuters reports that standardized test scores have slipped ↓ 7% in districts that rely heavily on tablets.

Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath told Bloomberg that Generation Z shows weaker cognitive performance despite unprecedented technology access, a trend that could hamper the nation’s ability to solve complex challenges.
