673-diamond necklace stolen from Vienna museum

Police in Austria are pursuing ↓ 2 suspects accused of snatching the historic ↓ 200-carat platinum piece, encrusted with 673 diamonds, during opening hours at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK).

The necklace, once owned by Egyptian royalty, was on loan for a special exhibition when the thieves shattered a display case and vanished with the treasure.

“This brazen act threatens the security of cultural heritage across Europe,” said a senior official of the Austrian Federal Police.

Security footage released by authorities shows the perpetrators in dark clothing, moving swiftly after the glass was smashed. Investigators believe the crime is linked to a wave of smash‑and‑grab raids targeting high‑value artifacts in major cities.

Authorities have appealed for public assistance, urging anyone with information to contact the police hotline. The stolen necklace, valued at several million euros, remains missing.
