AI replacing entry-level jobs: a new hiring reality for Gen Z

AI replacing entry-level jobs is no longer a speculative headline; a GMAC survey reveals that ↓ 33% of global recruiters admit to swapping junior positions for algorithms. The study, which sampled over 600 talent scouts from Fortune‑100 and Fortune‑500 firms, flags technology sectors as the most vulnerable, with ↑ 40% reporting automation of entry roles, closely followed by manufacturing.

Employers stress the need for hybrid talent: while routine coding, data processing and customer‑service tasks are being off‑loaded, they still prize judgment, problem‑solving and change management. Sabrina White, senior vice‑president at GMAC, warned that the shift should be seen as a call to master AI, not to shun it.

“The expectation isn’t that soft skills disappear; it’s that AI fluency becomes an added prerequisite,” White told Reuters.

Graduate business enrollment has risen 13% in 2024, yet only 13% of firms say they increased MBA hires in 2025. Median starting pay for MBA grads is projected to dip to $120,000, down from $125,000 a year earlier, while bachelor‑level offers slide to $72,000.

Top‑tier schools such as Harvard, MIT and Wharton still command salaries above $245,000 three years post‑graduation, underscoring that elite credentials retain premium value.

CEOs at IBM, AWS and autonomous‑trucking pioneer Waabi echo the sentiment, arguing that early‑career talent adapts to AI tools faster than seasoned staff. Over the next five years, recruiters anticipate a sharp rise in the weight given to AI proficiency, alongside enduring demand for communication and adaptability.
