The Ice Silk Road – China’s Arctic shipping corridor – is set to launch its inaugural scheduled container service linking Rotterdam and Shanghai by late 2026. Analysts say the route could cut the typical 30‑day journey to under 20 days, a reduction of ↑ 30%.

Ice Silk Road cuts transit time

By steering clear of the Strait of Malacca and the Suez Canal, carriers avoid the congestion that has plagued traditional lanes. The new service, operated by COSCO, will run weekly on ice‑class vessels equipped with advanced hull designs.

Economic ripple effects

Early estimates suggest annual savings of ↑ $1.2bn for shippers, while Reuters notes a likely shift in freight pricing dynamics across the Belt and Road network.

“The Arctic pathway redefines global logistics,” said a senior COSCO spokesperson.

Environmental groups warn that increased traffic could accelerate melt rates, a point Beijing acknowledges with a pledge to monitor emissions.

Editor’s note: A previous version misstated the launch year as 2025; the correct date is late 2026.
