Firefox iOS ad blocker powered by WebKit

Mozilla has introduced a built‑in Firefox iOS ad blocker that leverages Apple’s WebKit content‑blocking API and the EasyList filter set. The feature is off by default, giving users the choice to enable it in Settings.

Apple opened its browser engine to rivals in March 2024 to meet the EU Digital Markets Act, yet no alternative engine has shipped to a European iPhone since. Mozilla’s integration marks the first substantive use of the WebKit API by a third‑party browser on iOS.

“This is a step toward a more open mobile browsing ecosystem,” a Mozilla spokesperson said.

Analysts note that the move could drive a ↑ 12% rise in ad‑blocking adoption among iOS users, especially as the pandemic has entrenched mobile‑first habits.
