The United States breached the $40 trillion ceiling this week, a level once thought years away. The surge reflects unprecedented national debt growth during the last eight years of Republican and Democratic rule.

National debt growth under Trump and Biden

When Donald Trump assumed office in January 2017, the debt stood near $19.95 trillion. Four years later, it had climbed to roughly $27.75 trillion, a rise of ↑ $7.8 trillion under his first term.

Joe Biden inherited $27.75 trillion in January 2021. By the end of his tenure in January 2025, the figure approached $36 trillion, adding about ↑ $8.4 trillion.

Trump’s second stint, begun in January 2025, has already pushed the total up by $3.8 trillion, bringing the combined increase across both administrations to over a quarter of the current debt load.

“Fiscal discipline has been sidelined for partisan battles,” a senior Treasury analyst warned.

Analysts point to the pandemic response as a catalyst; Reuters notes that roughly one‑third of the debt surge since 2017 occurred during the emergency spending spurt. The 2017 tax overhaul, hailed by Republicans, is projected by the Bloomberg analysis to add close to $2 trillion to deficits through 2028, while proposed tax cuts in the recent “One Big Beautiful Bill” could tack on another $4.7 trillion by 2035.
