Iron Age burial discovered in Scottish well

Archaeologists from Highland Archaeology Services announced a startling find while expanding a quarry in the northern Highlands. The discovery consists of an adult skeleton placed at the base of a stone‑lined well, dated to the Iron Age.

The well measures about ↑ 3 m deep and ↑ 10 ft long, its interior lined with stone slabs and packed clay, likely to retain water.

Animal bones were scattered atop the human remains, but no grave goods accompanied the burial.

“Iron Age burials in northern Scotland are exceptionally scarce,” said Lachlan McKeggie, co‑director of the service.

Possible ritual closure

One theory links the interment to a ceremonial sealing of the well, a practice mirrored at sites such as High Pasture Cave on Skye, where a woman and two infants were buried as the entrance was shut down (Reuters).

The well lies roughly ↓ 1.6 km from the Iron Age settlement at Camore Wood, a complex of at least 20 hut circles and possible roundhouses documented in an August field report.

Researchers have yet to determine the individual’s sex, age or cause of death; radiocarbon dating and osteological analysis are slated for the coming months. 3‑D scans of the skeleton and surrounding artifacts have been uploaded to the team’s portal.

While the find reshapes our understanding of prehistoric Scottish mortuary customs, it also arrives amid renewed public interest in how ancient societies responded to crises, a theme echoed in recent studies of the pandemic era.
