Adtech tracking has moved from obscure server logs to a publicly searchable database. The new platform DecryptAds scrapes ads.txt, app‑ads.txt and sellers.json files, cross‑referencing them to reveal who can place ads or harvest data on any site or app.

How DecryptAds demystifies adtech tracking

By continuously crawling the declarations that publishers are legally required to expose, the service aggregates over ↑143 partners for a single domain such as espn.com, and flags entities located in “geo‑risk” jurisdictions like China, Russia or the UAE.

“We built this from a security angle, not just marketing,” says Zach Edwards, chief research officer at DecryptAds.

The tool shines when it uncovers mismatched entries – for example, a company listed as both seller and reseller, or a data‑broker appearing in a state‑mandated registry after recent pandemic‑era privacy reforms.

High‑risk ad partners and supply‑chain gaps

Four Russian‑linked firms, including Between Digital, appear in the ad stack of major U.S. military news sites. Their financial ties to sanctioned banks raise red flags that traditional ad‑tech audits miss.

DecryptAds also logs quiet removals – silent deletions from sellers.json that often signal fraud investigations, a practice rarely disclosed in public reports.

For security teams, the platform offers an API that can feed into SIEMs, while journalists can pull legal dossiers that map ownership, registration dates and hidden affiliates.

Experts recommend combining network‑level blockers like Pi‑hole with browser extensions such as uBlock Origin to cut the ad‑tech pipeline at both ends.
