SpaceX data centers set to outpace cloud rivals

Elon Musk, speaking at SpaceX’s inaugural earnings call as a public company, argued that the firm’s rocket‑building pedigree gives its new SpaceX data centers a decisive edge over entrenched cloud giants. He likened the advantage to “the New York Yankees playing a Little League team,” noting that designing reusable rockets and satellites translates into “trivial” data‑center challenges. “Rocket science is literally our daily business,” Musk told investors, adding that engineers spend each flight preventing a rocket from blowing itself apart, a discipline he believes yields “an amazing outcome” when applied to AI infrastructure. The company poured ↑ $8.4B into capital spending in Q2, reaching a total of ↑ $18.4B and reporting AI revenue of $2.6 billion, a ↑ 213% sequential jump. Contracts with Anthropic and Reuters‑cited Google underline the growing cloud pipeline, while Musk confirmed an exclusive build on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin GPUs, citing a forthcoming “significant percentage” of the chipmaker’s supply. At quarter‑end, SpaceX boasted 1.4 GW of nameplate compute, promising to breach 2 GW by year‑end and targeting a “tentative” 20 GW of power and cooling capacity by 2027, with a realistic floor near 15 GW. Though space‑based data‑center concepts have been floated, the focus remains on terrestrial facilities, where the company believes its aerospace rigor offers a competitive moat.

“Applying even a fraction of that discipline to data centers is kind of ridiculous, frankly,” Musk said.
