First orbital rocket launch from the UK delayed

German startup Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) announced on X that an unexpected issue forced the de‑stacking of its RFA One vehicle during pad‑side checks at SaxaVord Spaceport, pushing back the first orbital rocket launch from the UK by ↓ few weeks. The company declined to detail the fault but pledged a thorough investigation before re‑assembling the three‑stage launcher.

RFA One, a small‑satellite carrier with a reusable first stage, was slated for an August/September debut. Its postponement arrives amid a global squeeze on launch slots, as Reuters notes soaring demand for satellite constellations and defense missions.

“Securing the inaugural launch licence outside ESA’s Kourou hub marks a milestone for European autonomy,” said Jörn Spurmann, RFA’s chief commercial officer.

The setback underscores the pressure on emerging launch firms to hit timelines while navigating technical hurdles that are routine in rocket development. Yet the broader market remains buoyant, with ↑ demand for rideshare capacity as SpaceX’s Falcon 9 slots potentially tighten after 2028.

UK regulators have already granted RFA a spaceflight operator licence, and SaxaVord aims to become a viable alternative to the crowded Guiana Space Centre. Until the issue is resolved, the United Kingdom’s ambition to host its first vertical orbital launch stays on hold.
