India-Pakistan peace prospects amid lingering hostility

Four months after the four‑day war of May 2025, analysts are weighing whether a fragile India-Pakistan peace can survive in a region bruised by missiles, drones and diplomatic ruptures. The clash, the most serious since 1971, saw Chinese‑supplied missiles in Pakistani hands and French‑Israeli kits on the Indian side, while both capitals suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and sealed their borders.

History shows that after bloodshed the two neighbours have intermittently reopened trade corridors – the post‑1947 surge, the 1972 limited exchange after Bangladesh’s birth, and the 2010 media‑driven cultural bridge. Yet each thaw has been short‑lived, snapped by fresh provocations.

“We must keep the dialogue door ajar,” said Dattatreya Hosabale, senior RSS leader, in a recent interview.

Recent back‑channel meetings in Colombo and Bangkok, attended by retired diplomats, hint at a pragmatic streak. Reuters reported that both sides are wary of a ↓ 12% drop in foreign investment if another flare‑up erupts.

Pakistan wrestles with a Taliban insurgency on its Afghan frontier and a simmering border dispute with Iran, while India juggles a tense line with China and internal political pressures. The global oil market, still reeling from the Middle‑East turmoil, adds another layer of risk; millions of expatriates in the Gulf send remittances that underpin both economies.

Even as the pandemic reshaped supply chains, both capitals recognize that a renewed conflict would strain already fragile economies.

Nevertheless, each confrontation – 2016, 2019, 2025 – pushed the nuclear threshold nearer. The pattern suggests a new crisis is likely, unless senior leaders translate diplomatic gestures into binding mechanisms.
