Intercept fund launches $500 Million push against the common cold

The newly minted Intercept fund, backed by tech stalwarts Stripe and Anthropic, announced a ↑ $500 million war chest on June 24 to accelerate prophylactic antivirals and airborne‑pathogen controls.

Nan Ransohoff, Stripe’s public‑goods chief, says the goal is to shepherd at least two candidates through Phase I and Phase II trials, then hand them to pharma partners for Phase III.

What the money will back

Charlie Petty, co‑head of the initiative, outlines two tracks: immune‑priming drugs that block a range of respiratory viruses, and environmental tech such as HEPA filtration and UV‑C lighting for offices, airports and transit hubs.

“We aim to make the common cold and flu relics of the past,” Ransohoff told Reuters.

Proven air‑cleaning systems can cut infection rates, but retrofitting schools or buses is costly. Intercept is courting corporate pilots – Warby Parker, Mastercard and JPMorgan have signed up as early adopters.

Industry analysts warn that de‑risking antivirals is expensive; a Phase I/II program averages ↓ $25 million per candidate, while Phase III can exceed $100 million.

Samuel Scarpino of Northeastern University notes that prophylactic drugs could shift the economics, prompting investors to consider larger bets.

Ransohoff concedes the $500 million is a seed, not the final tally, but she believes it will catalyze further capital inflows.
