Ebola response stalls as testing gaps widen in DRC

An inadequate testing strategy is the Achilles’ heel of the current Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Health officials warn that without a rapid scale‑up, the outbreak could outpace containment measures.

Ebola response testing gap threatens containment

Field teams report that laboratory capacity is operating at less than half its needed throughput, a shortfall that ↓ 45% from WHO targets. Rapid diagnostic kits remain scarce, forcing clinicians to rely on clinical judgment alone. A senior WHO official told Reuters,

“If testing does not expand within weeks, we risk a regional spillover.”

The Ministry of Health has pledged to mobilize additional resources, yet logistical bottlenecks persist, from transport delays to power outages in remote labs. Lessons from the recent pandemic highlight the importance of early detection, but the current response repeats past mistakes. International donors are urged to fund mobile labs; each unit could increase daily testing capacity by ↑ 200 samples. Without decisive action, the Ebola response may falter, endangering thousands and undermining years of progress in disease surveillance.
