Amsterdam – In a coordinated strike, Dutch law‑enforcement and the National Cyber Security Center announced a botnet takedown that dismantled a network of ↓ 17 million compromised devices spanning computers, tablets, smartphones and IoT gear.

Botnet takedown shatters massive infection chain

Over 200 servers, most of them housed in the Netherlands, were seized, cutting the command‑and‑control backbone that powered DDoS attacks and credential‑harvesting campaigns. “The scale of this operation is unprecedented,” said a spokesperson from the Dutch Politie,

“we have neutralized a threat that jeopardised critical infrastructure across Europe.”

Analysts from Reuters estimate that similar botnets have generated illicit revenue in the low‑hundreds of millions of euros annually. By removing the central nodes, authorities have likely averted further financial loss and disrupted the cyber‑crime economy. The takedown also highlights the growing synergy between national police forces and private cybersecurity firms, a model that could become the standard response to transnational digital threats. Bloomberg reports that the operation required weeks of covert monitoring and international cooperation, underscoring the complexity of dismantling such expansive infrastructures.
