Marco Rubio visits India amid a fraught US‑India trade dialogue, as both capitals chase a durable commercial pact.

Marco Rubio visits India to bridge US‑India trade tensions

The Secretary of State’s itinerary includes meetings in New Delhi and Mumbai, where he will press Washington’s demand for a reduction in India’s ↑10% tariff on select electronics, while New Delhi insists on preserving its ↓5% trade surplus in services.

“We are committed to a fair, balanced framework,” Rubio said at a press briefing.

Analysts cite the lingering Reuters report that tariff spikes in 2023 dented bilateral growth, but both sides claim momentum toward a “long‑term agreement.” The Indian delegation, led by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, warned that any abrupt cuts could destabilise domestic industries.

Critics in Washington argue the administration’s leverage is waning, noting that President Trump’s earlier tariff slate left a Bloomberg analysis showing a 3.2% dip in US imports from India last quarter.

Outlook

Should the talks resolve the tariff impasse, the projected trade volume could climb to $150 billion by 2027, a figure that would eclipse the current $115 billion baseline.
