Chinese coal mine explosion claims ↓ 90 lives

At 19:29 local time on Friday, an explosion ripped through a coal mine in northern China, killing at least ninety miners, state media reported.

What officials say

“Rescue teams are on site and will continue operations throughout the night,” a provincial spokesperson told reporters, according to Reuters.

The blast occurred in a remote shaft of a state‑owned enterprise in Shanxi province, an area long plagued by safety lapses. Early assessments point to a buildup of methane gas as the likely trigger, though investigators have not ruled out equipment failure, according to AP News.

Local authorities have ordered a temporary suspension of all mining activities within a 50‑kilometre radius, demanding compliance with stricter ventilation standards. Families of the victims are being summoned to a government‑run assistance centre.

China’s coal sector, which supplies roughly 57 % of the nation’s energy, has faced mounting pressure to improve worker safety after a string of fatal incidents over the past decade. The latest tragedy reignites calls for comprehensive reform.
