The emerging energy squeeze—sparked by soaring oil prices after the Iran war and by a torrent of electricity demand from AI data centers—is reshaping the global economy.

Energy Squeeze and Inflation

In the United States, the Consumer Price Index jumped ↑ 3.8% in April, with higher energy costs responsible for most of the rise, according to Reuters. Year‑on‑year, energy expenses are ↑ 18%.

AI‑Driven Power Demand

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued an unprecedented alert, warning that data‑center load could outstrip grid capacity in several regions. While domestic natural‑gas supplies cushion the U.S. from direct oil shocks, electricity prices are still climbing as AI‑intensive workloads multiply.

“When energy is scarce, costly or unreliable, growth stalls and political pressure mounts,” said Jason Bordoff, founding director of Columbia’s Center on Global Energy Policy.

The dual pressure—oil‑price inflation from the Middle‑East conflict and electricity strain from AI—creates a feedback loop that may amplify populist discontent, especially as households grapple with higher pump and power bills. Policymakers face a narrowing window to secure supply, diversify generation and temper demand before the squeeze tightens further.
