FactSet forecasts that U.S. jobs April will rise by ↑ 65,000, a modest tally that masks deeper labor‑market shifts.

U.S. jobs April outlook amid Middle East oil shock

The Iran‑Israel clash shut the Strait of Hormuz, throttling roughly 20% of global oil flow and pushing ↑ $4.50 per gallon gasoline in the United States.

Despite the energy squeeze, the unemployment rate is projected to hold at 4.3%, a level that analysts say is near the new break‑even point for hiring.

“The question is whether the war will reverse hiring momentum,” notes Matthew Martin of Oxford Economics.

Private‑sector payroll processor ADP reported a surge of 109,000 jobs in April, the fastest pace since January 2025, underscoring a rebound that outpaces the official Labor Department estimate.

Fiscal stimulus from 2023 tax rebates continues to buoy consumer spending, prompting firms to expand workforces even as energy costs rise.

Healthcare remains the dominant employer, having added 360,000 positions over the past year, while other sectors collectively shed 120,000 jobs.

Policy shifts—such as the expiration of ACA subsidies and a new $100,000 fee on H‑1B visas—could strain rural hospitals that rely on foreign medical staff, warned Diane Swonk of KPMG.
