UAE leaves OPEC: implications for a strained oil market

The United Arab Emirates announced it will exit the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, citing the Iran‑Israel conflict that has tightened global oil supplies. Analysts estimate the move could shave ↓ 6% from OPEC’s collective output quota, while freeing the UAE to boost its own shipments by ↑ 3%. Market participants are already recalibrating price forecasts as Brent futures slipped below $80 per barrel.

“The decision reflects deep frustration with quota allocations that limit our export flexibility,” a senior UAE minister said, according to Reuters.

OPEC’s secretariat, however, warned that the departure could erode the cartel’s bargaining power, especially as Bloomberg reports rising geopolitical risk premiums. The shift arrives at a time when global demand growth is projected at 1.6% YoY, yet supply disruptions in the Persian Gulf threaten to offset any gains. Investors are watching the ripple effect on energy indices, where the Energy Select Sector SPDR has already logged a ↓ 2% decline since the announcement.
