six-figure earners discount grocery trend accelerates

Walmart chief John Furner told reporters in Bentonville that even households earning six figures are flocking to the retailer’s low‑price aisles as food bills climb. “We’re seeing higher‑income customers more often, buying larger baskets and visiting more frequently,” he said, echoing a broader shift noted by market analysts.

“The pressure point is fuel,” Furner added, hoping for a dip in energy costs.

Recent data from Clarify Capital shows ↑ 71% of six‑figure earners now shop at discount grocery chains, while 74% report cutting dining‑out expenses. Prices for staples have surged: ground beef reached a record $6.90 per pound, a ↓ 19% jump from a year ago, and orange juice jumped 21% since January. The squeeze is forcing shoppers across income brackets to trim entertainment, travel and even clothing budgets, according to a Swiftly survey citing Reuters. Dollar General’s CEO Todd Vasos warned that rural shoppers are consolidating trips to chase value, a pattern now mirrored at Walmart. As inflation erodes purchasing power, the line between “affluent” and “budget‑conscious” blurs, reshaping America’s retail landscape.
