Waymo traffic fiasco sparks call for stricter robotaxi oversight

In the aftermath of a three‑hour gridlock that crippled downtown streets, Mayor Daniel Lurie has urged California’s Department of Motor Vehicles to impose tougher standards on autonomous‑vehicle operators.

The robotaxi fleet operated by Waymo stalled after a software glitch forced vehicles to halt, creating a ↓ 3‑hour jam that left commuters stranded.

“Public safety cannot be compromised for technology experiments,” Lurie told reporters, referencing the chaos that echoed the city’s logistical challenges during the pandemic.

Industry analysts note that stricter licensing could increase operational costs for firms, potentially slowing the rollout of driverless services across the Bay Area. Reuters reports that similar incidents have prompted legislative reviews in Austin and Phoenix.

What new requirements might look like

Proposed measures include mandatory real‑time monitoring, higher insurance minimums, and a requirement that autonomous fleets maintain a human safety driver on‑site during peak traffic periods.
