Local anger and deep mistrust have turned hospitals into flashpoints, officials warn that the violence will accelerate the spread of the disease.

On July 15, angry crowds stormed Nyakunde Hospital in Ituri, the province accounting for 90% of reported cases, smashing fences and scattering patients. “Many of the attacks have been carried out by angry mobs who have stormed treatment centers,” Dr. Pierre Akilimali told reporters,

“It makes frontline personnel feel insecure and puts them in an uncomfortable position to perform their duties.”
