Data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) show a sharp contraction in violent crime across the United States’ 67 biggest police jurisdictions during the first quarter of 2026, extending the downward swing that began after the pandemic surge.

Violent Crime Rates Drop Nationwide in Q1 2026

Homicides fell ↑ 17.7%, robberies slid ↑ 20.4%, rapes were down 7.2% and aggravated assaults dropped 4.8%. The reductions appear in every major region, from the Northeast to the Sun Belt, suggesting a systemic shift rather than isolated local factors. Washington, D.C. posted a 64.7% plunge in homicides, while Philadelphia saw a 54% cut, San Diego 50%, and Memphis 34.4%. New York City, under Mayor Zohran Mamdani, recorded a 31.7% dip, and Los Angeles and Houston logged 23% and 36.4% falls respectively. Trump’s administration has pivoted, now touting the safety gains after earlier claims that Democratic‑run metros were crime‑ridden; the President previously dispatched federal troops to several hot spots.

“The data speak for themselves: cities are getting safer,” said a senior MCCA official.

Yet the picture is not uniform. Minneapolis, Atlanta and Virginia Beach reported modest upticks in overall violent incidents, warning that summer traditionally fuels a resurgence. Denver police have already cautioned about a possible seasonal spike despite the broader decline. For a full statistical breakdown, see the latest FBI Uniform Crime Report released this fall. The trend challenges the narrative shaping the 2026 midterm campaigns, where crime remains a potent political weapon. Reuters and AP News provide additional context.
