According to the 2024 World Press Freedom Index, the United States has dropped to ↓ 44 in the global ranking, slipping behind Ukraine, which now sits at 41. The shift marks a significant reversal after years of relative dominance.

Analysts point to increasing governmental pressure on journalists, expanded surveillance measures, and the rise of hostile legal actions as drivers of the decline. Reuters notes that the United States fell ↓ 5 places compared with the previous year.

“A free press is no longer a given in the United States,” said a senior researcher at Reporters Without Borders.
