The Department of Homeland Security announced on Monday that it is transferring hundreds of immigrants out of the Alligator Alcatraz detention centre, the sprawling complex perched on the edge of the Everglades. Human‑rights groups have long condemned the site for squalid conditions, and a series of lawsuits have kept the facility in the spotlight.

According to a Reuters report, the move follows a court‑ordered mandate that the government failed to meet after multiple rulings found the detention center in violation of federal standards. The relocation involves ↓ 300 detainees, many of whom will be sent to shelters in Jacksonville and Tampa.

“The continued use of Alligator Alcatraz is a stain on America’s commitment to humane treatment,” said a spokesperson for Amnesty International.

Officials argue the transfer eases overcrowding and reduces legal exposure, yet critics warn that the new sites lack adequate oversight. The debate is expected to intensify as Congress prepares to review funding for immigration enforcement, a point highlighted by Bloomberg.
