Six-Figure Earners Feel the Pinch Amid Soaring Gas Prices

At the Goldman Sachs Global Consumer and Retail Conference, Dollar General chief Todd Vasos warned that six-figure earners no longer view a $100,000 salary as a safety net. Gasoline now averages $4.48 per gallon, a rise of ↑ 40% from a year ago, while diesel tops $6.50, inflating freight costs.

Shift in Shopping Patterns

Vasos noted that even customers earning under $45,000 compress trips, buy nearer home and increase visit frequency. The same pressure is spilling over to the Reuters-cited data showing retail sales up ↑ 1.2% in August, defying expectations.

“I don’t feel like I’m higher‑income at $100,000 any longer,” Vasos told the audience.

Walmart’s recent analysis confirms that affluent shoppers are gravitating toward discount chains and dollar stores. The broader cost surge includes utilities, auto insurance, food and caregiving, all traced back to the inflation wave that began during the pandemic.

Despite the squeeze, employment remains robust, allowing consumers to stretch budgets. Dollar General’s catalog of 2,000 items priced at $1 or less is positioned as a hedge against ongoing price pressure.
