Trump Southeast Asia trade deals in limbo

Malaysia became the inaugural nation to terminate its tariff accord with the White House, sending a clear signal to other regional partners.

The move erodes the strategic calculus behind President Trump’s push to deepen economic ties across the region.

ā€œThis decision reflects Kuala Lumpur’s reassessment of the deal’s benefits,ā€ a senior Malaysian official told Reuters.

Analysts note that the cancellation removes an expected ↓ 2% reduction in U.S. export duties, while the administration had projected a ↑ 1.5% lift in bilateral trade volume.

Other Southeast Asian economies are now weighing the political cost of aligning with a trade agenda that critics label as ā€œtransactionalā€. Bloomberg reports that negotiations with Indonesia and Vietnam are stalled pending a review of the U.S. approach.
