President Donald Trump told Fox News that Chinese President Xi Jinping volunteered to act as a mediator in the Iran‑Houthi clash, offering to keep the Strait of Hormuz open for the roughly ↓ 20% of global oil and gas that transits the narrow waterway.

Xi offered to help broker peace with Iran, Trump says

In the aftermath of their Beijing summit, Trump recounted Xi’s pledge to “be any help possible” and his guarantee that Beijing would not ship weapons to Tehran – a claim Trump called “a big statement.” The Chinese leader, however, stopped short of addressing deeper ties such as intelligence sharing or the massive flow of Iranian crude to China, which remains the largest buyer despite U.S. sanctions.

“We do not intend to provide military equipment to Iran,” Xi told Trump, according to the White House readout.

The official communique highlighted a shared stance that the Strait must stay open and that China opposes any militarisation or toll‑charging of the passage. It also noted Xi’s interest in buying more U.S. oil to cut reliance on the Hormuz route. Analysts note that China’s leverage as Iran’s chief oil customer could be a diplomatic lever, but the offer appears calibrated: Beijing will keep purchasing Iranian oil while warning Tehran against using the waterway as a weapon. Trump added that Xi also agreed to purchase U.S. soybeans, liquefied natural gas and ↑ 200 Boeing 737 jets. The meeting unfolded as Washington grapples with a widening Middle‑East conflict and Beijing’s assertiveness around Taiwan, a flashpoint Xi described as “the most dangerous” in the bilateral relationship. Reuters and Bloomberg have reported that the dual‑theater focus could strain U.S. strategic bandwidth. Editor’s note: Correction – the summit took place on Thursday, not Wednesday.
