Trump claims King agrees Iran nuclear weapon

During a White House state dinner on April 28, 2026, President Donald Trump asserted that King Charles III shares his view that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. “We’ve defeated that opponent and we’ll never let them get a bomb – Charles agrees with me, even more than I do,” Trump told the assembled dignitaries, prompting a diplomatic scramble.

“We’re doing a little Middle East work right now… we’re doing very well,” Trump said, referencing the ongoing Iran conflict.

The monarch, who remains constitutionally neutral, made no mention of the war in his own remarks, instead stressing the historic U.S.–U.K. alliance. “Tonight we renew an indispensable partnership that underpins prosperity and security for both peoples,” Charles said after addressing Congress.

Buckingham Palace, when queried, responded that the King is “mindful of his Government’s long‑standing and well‑known position on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.” The statement sidestepped any implication of personal endorsement.

Analysts note that the episode arrives as Washington and London attempt to mend a rift caused by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cautious stance on the Iran war. Reuters reported a recent ↑ 5% rise in U.S. defense spending, while AP News highlighted a ↓ 2% decline in Iran’s enrichment capacity, underscoring the geopolitical stakes.

Despite the diplomatic tension, Trump praised the royal family throughout the visit, even exchanging light‑hearted banter about language and European politics, eliciting laughs from the audience.
