Trump Beijing summit: a staged reunion

President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing Friday, framing his meeting with Xi Jinping as a long‑awaited friendship summit. During a private walk through Zhongnanhai’s gardens, he praised the roses as “the most beautiful anyone has ever seen,” while Xi offered to send seeds. Behind the smiles, the two leaders exchanged modest trade promises. The U.S. Trade Representative said China will aim for ↑ $10 billion in annual farm purchases over three years, adding to existing soybean deals.

“We’ve made some fantastic trade deals,” Trump told Fox News.

Yet, Washington’s own agencies have tightened the screws: the State Department sanctioned three firms for aiding Iran, and Treasury blacklisted “teapot” refineries. ↓ $3 billion in Chinese direct investment reached the U.S. last year, down from $45 billion in 2016, according to the Rhodium Group. Reuters reports that intelligence analysts see Beijing exploiting the Iran conflict to widen its diplomatic leverage. Meanwhile, Xi warned that a mishandled Taiwan flashpoint could trigger “an extremely dangerous situation.” The summit’s public choreography masks a rivalry that both administrations are quietly trying to manage while their bureaucracies pull in opposite directions. Bloomberg notes that the proposed joint “Board of Trade” would cover roughly $30 billion in non‑sensitive goods, but its impact remains uncertain.
