Stitch Fix CEO Matt Baer’s Retail‑First Overhaul

When Stitch Fix CEO Matt Baer took the helm three years ago, he inherited a tech‑centric apparel business that had lost its footing after the pandemic. He is now applying traditional retail levers to restore profitability.

Founded in 2011 by Katrina Lake, the company once rode a wave of algorithmic hype, growing revenue from $2.1 billion in 2021 to a market‑cap peak of $11 billion. Yet, post‑COVID shoppers abandoned the platform, citing stale selections and a sluggish experience.

Back to Retail Basics

Baer, a former Walmart and Macy’s e‑commerce leader, has shifted the focus from pure tech to a hybrid model. Private‑label lines now account for ≈40% of sales, delivering higher margins, while new categories—active wear, footwear, accessories—capture untapped market share.

“Transformations take time, and we had the appropriate amount of patience through this process because the goal is for durable profitable growth,” Baer told Reuters.

Customer flexibility has been upgraded: shoppers can now pick items and set delivery cadence, while an AI‑powered virtual try‑on lets users overlay garments on personal photos.

Financial metrics show early signs of recovery. Quarterly revenue rose ↑ 4.7% year‑over‑year, and revenue per active client hit a record $578. Yet the business still wrestles with a ↓ 40% decline from its 2021 peak, pulling revenue down to $1.27 billion.

Active clients have crept up to 2.39 million, and cost cuts—including a $500 million reduction in staffing—have shored up the balance sheet. Despite these gains, the market values the firm at roughly $500 million, a fraction of its former valuation.

Analysts at Bloomberg note that Baer’s strategy hinges on marrying data insight with retail execution, a formula that could re‑establish Stitch Fix as a differentiated player for the 90% of Americans who dread in‑store shopping.
