Scientists in Brazil have confirmed the presence of columnaris disease – a lethal bacterial infection previously confined to Asian and U.S. aquaculture – in several southern‑state fish farms.

Columnaris Disease Detected in Brazil

The pathogen, belonging to the genus Flavobacterium, threatens tilapia and catfish stocks destined for domestic markets. According to a report by Reuters, the outbreak could shave ↓ 10% off projected yields this season. Local officials warn that containment measures may cost the sector ↑ $200M in emergency interventions.

“We are confronting a pathogen that has never before crossed continents in this way,” said Dr. Ana Silva, lead researcher at the Federal University of Paraná.

The discovery forces a reevaluation of biosecurity protocols across South America and may prompt import restrictions from traditional exporters. Stakeholders are urged to intensify water‑quality monitoring and adopt vaccine trials already in use in Asia.
