The shrinking pastor pipeline

The pastor pipeline is shrinking at an alarming rate, leaving a leadership vacuum in one of America’s oldest civic institutions. Enrollment in Master of Divinity programs at ATS‑accredited schools fell ↓ 14% between 2020 and 2024, while Catholic seminary numbers dropped sharply in the 2024‑2025 year, according to a Georgetown study. Black Protestant enrollment in ATS graduate programs slumped 31% from 2000 to 2020. More than four in ten clergy reported in a fall 2023 Hartford Institute survey that they had seriously considered leaving their posts since the pandemic.

“It’s harder and harder to be the pastor of a ‘purple church,’” says Eileen Campbell‑Reed, Vanderbilt Divinity School researcher, speaking to Reuters.

Rural congregations feel the pinch first; many share a single minister across several towns, and when a church closes the community loses informal hubs for food aid, child care and disaster relief. The Black church, long a de‑facto public‑health network, is also losing ground as parish closures hit Black, Latino and low‑income neighborhoods, a pattern highlighted by AP News. The Diocese of Oakland announced the shutdown of 13 churches, citing an “all‑time low” of priests. By contrast, the Assemblies of God reported attendance growth ↑ 6.2% and a 2.5% rise in adherents, showing that some segments remain buoyant. Women clergy now represent 23.7% of U.S. pastors, up from 2.3% in 1960, signaling a shift in the gender balance. Meanwhile, a growing number of priests from Africa and Asia are being assigned to parishes in the Midwest and West, reflecting the global re‑distribution of Catholic manpower.
