OpenAI announced the creation of GPT-Red, an autonomous red‑teaming AI designed to probe and exploit vulnerabilities in its own models. The project, described as an “AI super‑hacker,” operates behind strict safeguards.

The system runs continuous simulations, searching for attack vectors that could compromise large language models. Its mandate is to surface flaws before external actors can locate them.

“We built GPT-Red to stay one step ahead of adversaries, but we also recognised the need to isolate it completely,” a senior OpenAI engineer told Reuters.

Training consumed ↑ 1.5T tokens, leveraging the same infrastructure that powers ChatGPT. After deployment, the model was placed in a sandbox with no outbound network access, effectively caged to prevent misuse.

Security analysts note that while the approach could harden AI systems, it raises questions about transparency and governance. For further context, see the latest coverage from Bloomberg.
