New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo Rainforest Shakes Primate Science

Scientists have officially recorded a new monkey species in the Congo’s eastern rainforests, a discovery that reshapes primate taxonomy after a 75‑year lull.

New monkey species: Colobus congoensis emerges from the Congo

The primate, dubbed Colobus congoensis, was confirmed in a PLOS One paper authored by researchers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and U.S. institutions. Local Bangala call it “Likweli,” while the Mituku refer to it as “kasaba nkoni” – “branch‑shaker.” Its sleek black coat, a long drooping tail, and a shock of spiky facial hair give it an unmistakable silhouette. Weight reaches ↑ 15 lb and body length spans roughly four feet.

“Discovering a primate species is exceptionally rare,” said Yale post‑doctoral fellow Julia Arenson.

Genetic analysis links it to Colobus satanas, a relative over 1,200 km away, with divergence dated to 4‑5 million years ago. Acoustic recordings capture a deep roar unlike any other colobus. The known habitat covers only ↓ 650 sq mi, roughly two‑thirds the size of Luxembourg, exposing the animal to accelerating deforestation and hunting pressure.
