Moderna mRNA Ebola vaccine receives a ↑ $50 million CEPI infusion

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) announced Monday a rapid‑track infusion of ↑ $60 million to fast‑track three candidates against the Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV) sweeping the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Under the agreement, up to ↑ $50 million will fund Moderna’s pre‑clinical work and Phase 1 trials for its Moderna mRNA Ebola vaccine, while also scaling manufacturing pipelines for a potential Phase 2/3 rollout.

“We believe our mRNA platform can play an important role in responding rapidly to emerging infectious disease threats,” said Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel.

The mRNA technology that powered COVID‑19 shots is now being repurposed to encode the glycoprotein of BDBV, a strain that has caused a lethal flare‑up in eastern DRC. If early data prove promising, CEPI stands ready to mobilize additional resources for larger trials, echoing the swift mobilization seen during the pandemic.

Analysts note that the infusion not only bolsters the vaccine pipeline but also signals a broader shift toward mRNA solutions for zoonotic threats, a trend highlighted in recent Reuters coverage of global health financing.
