Louisiana Senate primary runoff: Trump‑backed Julia Letlow defeats Bill Cassidy, faces John Fleming in August duel

The Louisiana Senate primary runoff set for August has turned former incumbent Bill Cassidy into a political casualty. In Saturday night’s open‑primary, Trump‑backed Rep. Julia Letlow captured the largest vote share, while state treasurer John Fleming trailed in a distant second, forcing a head‑to‑head contest next month. Cassidy, who finished third, will not return to Washington for a third term.

Louisiana Senate primary runoff ignites intra‑party war

“When you participate in democracy you don’t whine or claim the election was stolen,” Cassidy said in his concession speech, refusing to name the former president.

Trump celebrated Letlow’s victory on Truth Social, lauding her as “a fantastic person” and promising “brilliant” representation for the “Great People of Louisiana.” The endorsement, posted after the results, underscored the former president’s continued sway over GOP primaries. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the NRSC had backed Cassidy, but Governor Jeff Landry and other Trump allies threw their weight behind Letlow. The former senator’s record—voting to convict Trump in 2021 and defending vaccine policy during the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmation—has kept him in the president’s crosshairs. Last month Trump accused Cassidy of blocking his surgeon‑general pick, Casey Means, on Truth Social. The battle reflects a broader schism within the Republican Party as incumbents face anti‑Trump challengers nationwide. While the seat is rated “Solid Republican” by the Cook Political Report, the ↓ 45% of voters who supported the incumbent signal a potential erosion of establishment support. The upcoming runoff will test whether Trump’s endorsement can translate into a decisive win for Letlow, or if Fleming can capitalize on anti‑incumbent sentiment. For full election data see Reuters.
