WD 1856 b is the only confirmed Jupiter-size planet to have survived the death of a Sun‑like star. The gas giant circles a white dwarf – the smoldering core left after a star exhausts its fuel.

Using JWST, astronomers captured the first detailed spectra, revealing a cloud‑shrouded atmosphere and puzzling temperature profile.

“We didn’t expect to see a gas giant this close to a dead star,” notes Christopher O’Connor of Cornell University.

The discovery was accidental: the TESS mission was scanning about ↑ 2,000 white dwarfs for transiting debris when the deep dip signaled a planet. What makes the system stranger is the planet’s tight 32‑day orbit, defying models that predict such giants should be ejected or consumed. Researchers are now debating whether the planet migrated inward after the star’s red‑giant phase or survived a chaotic gravitational dance. The findings echo broader questions about planetary survival after stellar upheavals, a topic that gained fresh relevance as scientists compare post‑pandemic data on exoplanet detection rates pandemic.
